This study examines the verses of raḍā‘ah (breastfeeding) in the Qur’an and the interpretation of Imam al-Shafi‘i regarding these verses. Raḍā‘ah is not only related to the biological aspect of breastfeeding but also has significant legal implications in establishing mahram relationships in Islamic law. This research focuses on analyzing Surah al-Baqarah (2): 233 and Surah an-Nisa (4): 23, as well as examining the interpretative method employed by Imam al-Shafi‘i.This research is a library-based study using a qualitative approach, employing thematic exegesis and usul al-fiqh approaches. The data are derived from the Qur’an, hadith, and relevant classical and contemporary literature, which are analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method. The results show that Imam al-Shafi‘i applied the method of takhsis al-‘amm (specification of general texts), by specifying general Qur’anic verses through hadith. Through this method, he determined that the breastfeeding which establishes a mahram relationship consists of five distinct feedings within the first two years of a child’s life. This interpretation provides clearer legal boundaries compared to other schools of thought. The legal implications of raḍā‘ah include the establishment of mahram relationships that prohibit marriage, although it does not affect inheritance rights. Therefore, raḍā‘ah holds an important position in Islamic family law as a non-biological relationship recognized by the Sharia.
